More on My Social Studies Interactive Notebook

This post includes more pictures of my social studies interactive notebooks we have used this school year.  You will see most of the information in this post are foldables from Dinah Zike and mine is lacking color like the students.

  1. I love your interactive social studies journal. Do you have links to the sheets that can be glued into the notebook?

    1. Those are all from Dinah Zike (http://dinah.mybigcommerce.com/index.php) and from InspirEd Educators (http://inspirededucators.com/Thematic_Units.html) We study ancient civilizations in 6th here in NC with our new Essential Standards that are in conjunction with Common Core. I am new to 6th grade and teaching social studies this year, so I have used InspirEd Educators thematic units for all of my lessons. In addition, the Dinah Zike books are great.

      Hope this helps!

    5. Where do you get these resources? I teach third grade and just need the foldable page. All the links do not work.

    6. The books are from Dinah Zike. You will just have to Google search for the foldable book. Some of the stuff came from Inspired Ed...I would need to know exactly what you needed. I've moved on to teaching Project Lead The Way, which is all technology/hands-on stuff and have loaned out all of my books.

  4. I googled your information: does the book look like a composition note book with blue trim and a girl student, with her back facing you, working on a project on the front cover?
Thank you for responding soooo quickly :)

    1. Yes, it looks like a composition notebook. I added a picture wihtin the blog that I "borrowed" from the website. As soon as mine is returned, I will take a much better picture of it and post. Hopefully that will help. Dinah Zike also has one on Nonfiction Foldables that I have.

  7. Seldy--Just found you on pinterest. I am going to be teaching 6th grade SS in NC next year. Am in the process of buying Zink foldable book. Did you buy the ancient civilization pack from inspired ed? Also, could the interactive notebooking work with a spiral notebook as well? I noticed that you had dividers.....what were they? Thanks for any help!

    1. Yes, the ancient civilization unit did come from InspirEd Educators as well as the Ancient Egypt one. They have one for all of the ancient civilizations that are now part of the NC Essential Standards (Mesopotamia, Rome, Greece, India/China, Africa, etc).

I used spiral notebooks in my language arts classes and loved them. With my switch to science this coming year, I decided that I am going to use the spiral notebooks in science instead of the composition notebooks. I like the bigger pages.

The tabs were made with a tab punch that can be found from Stampin' Up. I saw a pin on pinterest with them and tracked them down to that company. Luckily, I have crafty friends and I put out a plea on Facebook and one of my friends sold me her punch for $10, she said she had only used it once and really did not have a need for it. They are around $20 from Stampin' Up. I love that thing! And I can get enough tabs for an entire class of 28 from one sheet of cardstock.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  10. Hi! I've looked at a couple ways to do the interative notebook over the years. I love your twist on it. I was wondering if this is the only notebook your students use for your class. Do they run out of room in them? Also, do they take regular notes in it? It seems that you don't do a lot of notes. Maybe this is something I should look into for next year! (8th grade teacher)

    Thanks, M

    1. M,

This is the only notebook my students use, but I use one for language arts and one for social studies. I have not quite yet filled up one yet. This is just my third year using them. The first year, I started during the middle of the year. Then the past two years I have used them all year.

They have really helped get my students organized and keep up with all of their notes for the entire year. If there is an assignment that I want them to hand in, the just use loose leaf notebook paper.

Most of the notes we take are in the notebook, we do take more notes than what it seems, I just did not take a picture of many of those pages.

My students have really bought in to using them this year and have referred back to them throughout the year. It was very encouraging to see them looking back for information in their notebooks to help them.

Please let me know if I answered your question or not or have others. I will do my best to try and help you.

  11. After using the interactive notebooks with my 6th graders for Science, I am now moving into Social Studies. I again want to use the notebooks because I have seen their benefits. The students also take such pride in them. I almost feel guilty, however, because my students will have access to iPads. As much as I love technology and want to go paperless as much as possible, I also see the benefits of using the notebooks for social studies. I suppose I could 'think differently' and set up a notebook in the Cloud. Are you dealing with any of these challenges or have any advice for me? Thank you!

  12. Thank you so much for your wonderful ideas! I was at a total loss for where to begin with interactive notebooks. I also teach 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts in NC and was looking for a way to use this tool across the board. With you guidance and resources, I have begun a truly amazing notebook for social studies! Thank you for being such an asset to the teaching profession especially for those of us who are just beginning our teaching career!

I also teach in NC! I am a veteran teacher but have never taught 6th grade and have been "out of the loop" for the past several years as I have been teaching compugter skills. Thank you!

  15. The parts of a map and globe venn are from the Dina Zike book mentioned in the post titled Physcial Geography. You can find links to that book in her store in other posts on this page and I have post dedicated to all of the notebook foldables books I have/use.

    Hope this helps.

  16. I love your notebook stuff. I am going to take the plunge and begin doing them this year with my 7th grade Language arts class. I'm just a little stuck on "where to start."

I read about the file tab punch you bought to make tabs, I want one of those so badly now. However, I've looked for a few hours on the web and didn't find a one for sale. We R Memory makers will have one out soon...in September, but I wanted it before school started.

Keep coming with the compilation of ideas. It has been a huge help!

Did you try ebay? A few months ago when I was searching for mine, I found a few on ebay - it is worth a shot. Put a plea out on facebool (if you use it) and see if any of your friends have one they may be willing to lart with.
