Desk Plans...finally!

So, I know that many a few of you have been waiting forever for me to get measurements of my computer desk.  Well, the slacker has finally followed through!  It took me a couple of extra days and trips than I had planned, but I did get the measurements today (after I made a second trip back to school today with a tape measure - I have one in my classroom, but did I mention I am MOVING classrooms and everything is still packed/strung all over the room?)!
I have taken two pictures of the drawings I attempted to make.  You have to promise that no one will be laughing at my poor attempt to draw - I am definitely not an architect, designer, or artist!  I hope that you can see the measurements in the photo.

I had mentioned that I would make some tweaks to my original design, so the second photo is one where I erased the original lines I drew in pencil and used a red pen to hopefully show what I would modify if I ever build a newer one.

I just hope it all makes sense and is clear enough to get a gauge as to what you could have someone build for you.  I am posting this from my part-time job, but when I get home will attempt to scan my drawing and place it in google docs so you can download it as well.

I hope no one has any questions, because I am not sure I will be able to exaplain very well.  BUT...if you do have questions, I will do my best to attempt to answer them for you.

FYI...mine was made out of 1 inch plywood (not sure what kind) and a couple of 2X4s which were ripped  down to make the shelf support and then even smaller to make a lip around the top edge.  I painted it orange thinking this was a great idea...wowsers was I wrong!  So then I painted it black and clear coated it.  Also, the holes are needed to be able to put the wires through.  I think he made the holes 2in diameter to allow the ends of the cables to pass through the openings.

Good luck and happy constructing!

Here are the dimensions/measurements of my current computer desk/stand.  I hope this is clear.  Please ignore the horrible drawing.

Here is a "tweaked" version of the computer desk/stand.  I hope all the red makes sense.  I know my drawings are ghetto fabulous and everyone is jealous of my abilities!

    1. I have my desk sitting about 2 feet from the wall. I went to Tractor Supply and bought some sort of rubber matting the is used in horse trailers. It is about 4 feet wide and they sell it by the foot. I get 2 feet and lay that over the wires between the desk and wall. I tried to find one of those cord covers that is like a little ramp and you put the cords under/inside, but I could not find one big enough to hold all of the cords. I gave up and came up with a second plan using the rubber mat - I think it works better anyway.

  3. So I am super impatient--and couldn't wait on the plans to be posted but I have to share with you what I did.
I printed out the pictures you had posted originally and used "scale factor" to determine the approximate measurements. My husband knows a cabinet maker friend and I took him the original picture and then my rough drawing and measurements to see what he could do. We picked up my desk yesterday and I must say I am VERY pleased! The only major "issue" that I messed up on was the height. I had it done @46" but with wheels it's 48". I think it might be a tad too tall for me to see a student if they are sitting right in front of the desk but I'm working on a solution to that one as well. I decided not to paint mine yet so I am doing coats of polyurethane to seal it. Can't wait to see how it holds up this school year. Thanks for the rubber matting tip as I was wondering about that as well.
Just think I found your blog because I was looking at doing interactive math and ss notebooks this year--thanks for sharing all that you do!

    1. Arlene,

Sorry it took me so long to get plans to you. The pictures are horrible - I am so NOT an artist! You will probably come up with a great plan to make it work in your room. You will have to share some pictures of your stand (rseldomridge@caldwellschools.com). I wasn't going to paint mine at first, but then I painted it orange (my favorite color) - it was way too much orange, then went with the black and coated it with poly.

I am glad that my ramblings have been of some help.

  6. I am lucky enough to work at a charter school with lots of parents who volunteer. One of the talents listed on the volunteer form was carpenter. So I asked a parent to make this for me. I thought I'd share the plans that he drew up.
